About the collaboration
When NIGO and Rei Kawakubo first crossed in 2008, BAPE was already the proof-of-concept that streetwear could be loved like luxury — and CDG was already the proof that fashion could be loved like cult worship. The first BAPE × CDG capsule fused the shark hood with the PLAY heart, and it sold out everywhere it landed.
Two decades later it's still the most-anticipated yearly drop in BAPE's calendar. Each release is a tight three-or-four-piece capsule — usually a hoodie, a pocket tee, sometimes a pair of pants — and each one is treated as collectible the moment it hits the shelf. Resale typically prices these at 1.5-2.5× retail within the week.
What makes the partnership land: both houses have a deep rule that the design has to mean something on the body, not just on the print. CDG's heart sits on a BAPE shark like it was always there. The drops are short. The shop windows in Aoyama and Tokyu Plaza Omotesando line up. It works because both labels are run by people who care more about the next twenty years than the next quarter.
